Immi and I are sharing a cupcake. I discovered that if I offer her a fork, she’ll eat the cake too and not just the frosting!

…a little brother!
We had the level II sonogram today (I’m currently 18 weeks and 5 days along). After a very long poke and jab (the baby was being very very active and won’t sit still even for a split second!) they were able to get an image of all the major organs and limbs and verified 5 little fingers on hands and feet. Honestly, I consider myself a quite experienced sonogram patient at this point, but he was moving around so fast that I had no idea what I was looking at most of the time…
And because he won’t sit still for the photo, we didn’t get a very good printout, I’d say the one from last month is better. Here’s the least worst one from today.

They also printed for us a 3D picture, just for fun (not particulary dignositically useful, apparently). Todd thinks (and I agree) that 4D scans are creepy looking, but if you can relax your eyes a little, you can see his face quite well.

There’s just one catch. Sort of. They detected what’s called “soft markers” which can, combined with other indicators (of which so far we have absolutely none), indicate chromosome abnormality. We’ll be talking to my OB about it at my next appointment for sure, but there’s really no need for worry at this point since the baby appears to be structurally perfect and my nuchal translucency test came out really well. Of course I’m annoyed that now I’m at least a little anxious.
Anyway, I think that the bigger issue here is that we are having a BOY! I hope he likes the color pink and My Little Ponies, since that’s what we got:D All kidding aside, seriously, what am I going to do with all of immi’s little shoes I’ve been saving for her little sister???
Immi is being spooky. Well, actually she just took a bath mood-lit with some rechargeable nightlights. We’ve had these in red, green and blue, and immi LOVES them!

Today, immi said ‘hat!’ (while pointing at a hat in a picture book) and few other things but i can’t remember…
We aren’t done yet with immi’s room (it’s getting there…). Most of immi’s toys have been locked up in her new room and I figured she misses her toys so here we are playing in the very chaotic unfinished play room.

Little witch in training!

Today, immi said “fish!!” (…at the goldfish crackers…) and “gurgurt!?” when she was hoping for some yogurt.
And immi’s little sister/brother has been moving around a lot. Now s/he is big enough for me to be able to feel little kicks and jabbs. We have a sonogram appointment 2 days from now and hopefully they can tell his/her gender. What’s your guess??
Very tired immi fell a sleep in the living room.

Immi has been very good about sticking stickers on in her notebook or on herself and I’ have been trusting her with stickers, I guess a little too much. Look at what happened to my shelf of books!

Immi has been saying all sorts of things lately. Addition to regularly used words are ‘ice’ and ‘lights’. When we walk into a dim room, immi always asks for lights to be turned on.
She also said ‘key’ (I think I’ve heard her say that long time ago…) and ‘popcorn’ (we made some last night). These days, immi has been saying quite an assortment of words that I can’t exactly remember all of it.
Immi is also getting quite good at dressing herself. She can — some with more effort than others — put on skirt, pants, socks, shoes, jackets and shirts. Tights and Onsies (those buttons on the bottom!) are still a bit difficult to put on correctly.
I found a bakery in Herndon (a town nextdoor to Reston) — Patisserie Lille. Naturally, we had to stop by!
Immi and Todd are having cookies, I got a fruit tart (it has kumquat on it!!). The owner of the place was very nice and we chatted for a while.

Immi finally warmed up to her baby doll she got for Christmas from her Grandmom! This is the first time I’ve seen immi stroll the doll (and not the doggie). Immi even gave her kisses! Immi just recieved the tennis shoes she is wearing from her great-grandparents in Cody.

Immi thinks that my arm warmers are her leg warmers. She is watching the spin cycle.

Todd said to me quite late in the evening “You know, only thing I wanna eat is Indian food!”. This was so very funny to me because we hardly ever eat Indian food (I over-dosed on Indian during college years, and Todd’s stomach doesn’t really like it) AND I just had microwave Chicken Tikka Masala from WholeFoods for lunch (Todd didn’t know this) for the first time in…I don’t know how long!
Todd and I are synchronized in our cravings, it’s really funny, uncanny and happens quite often. And it’s even worse during pregnancy!
…anyway, you can’t ignore a craving so here we are at a local Indian restaurant. Of course Todd ordered Chicken Tikka Masala:D

Immi decided that wearing swimming goggles on her head is totally THE new look. She is playing with Hello Kitty block puzzle (she doesn’t know that it makes six different big pictures, she just enjoys putting them neatly back in the box) at the moment.

Every time immi wears a hugely over-size hoodie, I think that immi looks like DEATH’s (of Terry Pratchett variety!) little apprentice. This time she’s even got a Hello Kitty [sort-of] scythe.

Immi discovered a scrunchie in my drawer and she wanted me to put it in her hair. She seems to like it a lot.

We are doing our weekly grocery shopping. Immi is enjoying being really tall!

Immi and her daddy playing.

Immi overheard her dad saying to someone on the phone that he was going to give immi a bath. This got immi very excited and she ran over to the bathroom door, tapped on it and asked hopefully — “ba, baaath!?”. Immi loves bath, and I have no idea why because it inevitably ends with shower which she really hates!
I’ve heard immi say many words now, but she hardly ever repeats same words. Only words she uses with regularity is “hi”, “bye” and for some reason …”cheese”!
Immi’s tiny sibling has been very active lately, I think that s/he had hick-ups today. I can tell already that s/he is really very different from immi!
Todd sent me off to DC to hang out with my sister for 1/2 a day saying that he’d be most productive if I were happy and not meddling with his to-do-list:p Junko and I had a long lunch at Busboys and Poets (I had a burger, Junko had a Cobb Salad, and we both had fresh lemonade with pomogranate juice), then window-shopping and junktiquing on U Street, and then teatime at Teaism (chai tea!). Anyway, after a long productive day of immi-less relaxing, Junko came home with me to Reston for the evening (Junko had Monday off work and Todd wanted her to do reiki).
We got phở to-go (Junko really wanted it, apparently phở-craving is contagious!) for dinner. We all finished eating, and immi did too, but she decided that she want to have some more soup. While I sorted out the kitchen, Antie Junko was supervising immi. When I walked into the living room, this is what I found:

Immi is sitting on the table and splashing soup everywhere! This scene is funny to me since immi is usually quite well mannered at the table (she gets compliments all the time from strangers when we dine-out for being so well behaved!). I think that immi just wanted to give her favorite auntie a hard time:D
After the soup incident, immi and her auntie are playing with immi’s little ponies.

I never really cared for Valentine’s day much. The first very memorable one is actually the one shortly after immi was born. Immi was born a day after her due date, but if she wasn’t willing, she was scheduled to be born on the February 14th (I’m happy she decided to join us on her own!). Todd and I always say that everyday is like a Valentine’s day anyhow, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take the opportunity to do something fun!
…so we headed out to Leesburg, since it’s the place we like to get away to when even Charlottesville is a bit too far away. We are at a little Italian cafe for lunch. Immi absolutely loved their bread and now sharing some with her dad.

We stopped by Lola for a cupcake and a cookie and went to our usual coffee shop in town. Here’s immi picking frosting off my cupcake!

It was really quite nice out today. We are getting some sunshine, just outside the coffee house.

In the evening, immi’s grandmom stopped by to be her Valentine:) She brought her a pink giraffe that dances to a silly song — immi loved it of course!

Immi continues to amaze me with her intelligence, creativity, and dexterity. I show her how to stack a few blocks and she build a block sky scraper!
Before our poopy-pants western doctors attempt to tell us that Immi is too thin or Immi does not talk early enough…perhaps they should read Immi Blog. A two minute screaming office encounter is hardly enough to tell anything about anyone, much less get to know Imms.
Perhaps they should not use outdated development charts from fat, white, American bottle-fed babys from the mid-west that were taken like half a century ago. Perhaps they should ask more questions about the childhood development of the parents to discover things that might be relevant to her development like that Kyoko has always been petite and that I started talking late…in order to make a relevant diagnosis BEFORE they subjugate children to additional, needless, expensive and sometimes painful testing.
I wonder if our Doctors themselves were stacking blocks 18 high @ two years of age? Probably not. Oh well! Immi is too smart and cool to want to be a doctor anyway, she will probably be a fashion diva or rocker star!
Me&baby-no.2 had a monthly check-up appointment today. Immi fell a sleep in the car and is still sleeping on her dad in the waiting room!

Nothing much to report here. All the test results came back normal, I gained exactly the amount of weight I’m suppose to gain (1lb a week!) and the baby’s heart beat sounded good.
It’s a strange thing having the 2nd baby for the first time. Not only are we even more relaxed about this than when we had immi, but the major difference is that we aren’t running around making baby-shopping list. It seems like buying stuff was such a big part of preping for immi’s arrival, and I’m definitely enjoying non-consumerism. Realistically, we’ll probably purchase one or two items, plus some clothes when the time nears. I’ll probably get my sewing machine out in a few months to make the rest (since now I know excatly which store-bought-things I wasn’t satisfied with and I definitely have ideas for improvements!).
Immi’s grandparents wanted to take us out for dinner to celebrate immi’s birthday. So here we are at The MeltingPot. We are waiting for her grandparents at the entrance.

Immi seems to enjoy eating assortment of things here. She is having broccoli with yummy dips now.

Around immi’s bedtime, our friend Jessica came over to work on some stuff with Todd, and she brought immi a HUGE hello kitty coloring book. She is waking around in her PJ with the coloring book and the birthday balloon which the very nice waiter at the MeltingPot gave her on our way out.

Immi figured out how to buckle herself into her car seat (5-point harness!!)! We had the car seat laying about indoors for several days while our car was being inspected. It takes her a bit of time but she eventually gets it done correctly. It’s a very good thing that she can’t unbuckle (her hands are too small and not strong enough) herself yet!
Mmmmmm the first taste of Immi’s 2nd birthday cake ever!
Happy Birthday Immi!!
It’s hard for me to believe that immi is already 2! How amazing is that? She really isn’t a baby anymore. She can dress herself, knows of many songs that she loves to dance to, and recycles just like any other responsible citizen of our planet earth.
Immi used her potty yesterday! …well, sort of. She sat on it with her clothes and diaper on, made a funny face and made some poop. I’m glad she seems to understand its purpose, I’m sure our kitties appreciate this too:D
New addition to the food words immi says is “cookie!!”.
…and we had the 2nd-year health check-up. Not exactly the funnest activity for the birthday-princess. Immi absolutely HATES going to the pediatrician and she freaks out the moment we step into the private office. She is now 32&3/4 inches tall and 20lb 9 oz. She was screaming nearly the entire time even though she didn’t even have to get any shots. According to the pediatrician, she is doing great except for 2 things. One being her low weight. He tried to make a fuss over it, so I had to stare into him and say “YOU MEAN YOU ARE CONCERED ABOUT IT NOW EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS BEEN BELOW AVERAGE IN WEIGHT FOR TWO ENTIRE YEARS???”. Well, that got him to say nothing more. However, he gave me phone number for Early Intervention for speech delay and an audiologist for hearing test (to rule out speech delay due to poor hearing). We really aren’t worried at all about it since immi can hear me open a candy jar from another room(!), understands most of what we are saying, follows directions, her dad was a late-talker, she is very social and communicative, and clearly intelligent, happy and well-adjusted. We will make the apointments shortly (I’d be curious to see what the specialist would say anyhow), but needless to say I’m annoyed that there is absolute no room for individual uniquness in western medicine.
We are celbrating immi’s birthday about 12 hours early this year (Sunday is a good day for party, don’t you think?). Here is immi digging right in to her cake by pulling the pony off and licking the whipped cream!

I didn’t bake the cake, we got it from a really cute and very tasty bakery in DC. …but I did decorate it:) This is what the cake looked like before:

Immi is playing with her Grandmom with the new wooden cake decorating set she was just gifted.

Immi is having more cake…

Auntie Junko got her a beautiful wooden alphabet blocks. Immi is enjoying organizing and reorganizing.

Immi just rescued her super-sized pony from the factory box.

Immi and her pony are having a little snack of raspberries after post-party-nap-time.
